Give me space
Our club has adopted the yellow Give Me Space policy.
Handlers with dogs who need a bit more space to feel comfortable will wear a yellow hi-vis Give Me Space vest during class time. Vests are available from the club house for use each training session.
Handlers may request to wear a vest or, at the discretion of the Instructor, handlers may be asked to wear a yellow vest for the safety and benefit of the dog needing the space and all other dogs in the vicinity. Any handler that has a dog exhibiting anxiety, fear, excessive lunging, or aggression will be asked to wear a Give Me Space high visibility yellow vest.
How much space do they need?
We estimate that 4–5 metres is best. But watch the dog, their handler, and your dog and adjust accordingly. Remember the dog who needs extra space might need more from particular dogs than they do from others. They won’t necessarily like (or dislike) every other dog equally – we don’t like other people equally either so that’s fair.
Giving the anxious dog space will allow the dog and their handler to settle and feel more secure. This allows for the opportunity to learn and to relax, shifting the focus from the dogs around them to the more pleasurable training exercises.
Be aware of your dog’s behaviour and of your surroundings whilst at training.
Anyone who refuses to wear a yellow vest when asked to do so, will not be permitted to train.
