Have you decided you want to trial with your dog?
Fantastic! It’s a positive way to build engagement between you and your dog. It can be challenging, but also very rewarding. Trials are held all over Victoria and you can choose which trials you attend. Our Club has several members trailing – what a great way to meet and form friendships with like-minded members.
If you have decided that you want to trial with your dog, and you have participated in club training for your chosen sport, then there are a few things you need to do prior to entering a trial.
Both you and your dog need to be registered with Dogs Victoria. Membership forms are on their site under the “Forms” tab.
If you have papers for your dog from the breeder, you can either trial under the breeder name or transfer the dog to your name. If your dog is not pedigree, you need to register as an Associate. Transfer of ownership and Associate registration forms are also on the Dogs Vic website under the “Forms” tab.
Payment is required for membership/registration, and these can be found under the “Forms” tab, under Fees.
It’s important to download and read the rules for each sport when starting training. These can be found on the Dogs Australia website here:
Entering Trials
Most trials in Victoria are listed on Vic Dog Trials but also keep an eye on websites and Facebook pages of other clubs for information on their trials and the schedule for their trial.
The schedule advises venue, times, prices, judges, etc., and points you in the direction for the website of where to enter a trial.
If you have questions about a trial, ask one of your instructors – we’re always happy to help.
As you progress through trials you will gain passes that go towards your Title (refer to specific dog sports for details of the required passes and titles).
When you are at a trial and pass your last one to get title, ensure to tell the judge / stewards that you have gained your title. Doing this lets the organisers know that you are to receive a ribbon / sash / rosette for achieving the Title.
You’ve entered trials, and have passes and titles – what now?
Congratulations! There are now a few steps to have your title recognised with Dogs Victoria and for our Club history here at Bendigo Obedience Dog Club.
For Dogs Victoria recognition, head to the “Forms” tab for the relevant Title Application form. Fill in the form and send it off to Dogs Victoria by post, along with your original papers for your dog (tip: ensure to keep a copy of your dog’s papers).
For Bendigo Obedience Dog Club recognition, download the “Title Notification and Trophy Application” form at the end of your first trial and fill in all details (read the instructions carefully!).
