Rally
Rally, previously called Rally Obedience/Rally-O, includes similar behaviours to Obedience. However, it is run as a course with signs to direct the handlers instead of being directed verbally by the judge. Another big difference is that praise and cues are encouraged for Rally to keep the dogs engaged. There can be some tricky moves involved!
Benefits
Rally builds on your Obedience skills. You can also talk to your dog throughout the course so it really enhances the dog–handler relationship.
Before you start
Rally is a fun way to build engagement with your dog while doing obedience. You will need to be able to keep your dog’s attention for at least short periods before starting, and dogs will need to be comfortable waiting (crated or calmly by your side) while everyone takes their turn on the course.
Trialling
The signs in a course are called ‘stations’. Each subsequent level of Rally uses additional signs increasing in difficulty. It is important to know the specifics of each sign, as points are deducted for incorrectly performing the action. Handlers can walk the course beforehand to familiarise themselves with the signs used.
