Obedience
Practicing Obedience is an excellent way to ensure you have a companion who understands what you expect of them, and it strengthens your bond with your dog. Many people attend obedience classes to achieve a socialised, well-behaved family companion rather than compete in trials.
The activities you learn and practice in regular obedience classes at Club form the components of an obedience test, such as heeling, recalls, sit, down, and stays.
Benefits
Obedience is about everyday skills you might want your dog to be able to do, and it’s a great starting point for all manner of dog sports as they all require a minimum level of basic obedience to be successful.
Obedience training gives you the tools to keep your dog safe in the world, enhances your relationship with your dog, and helps create well-mannered companions for life.
Before you start
Starting in Obedience is easy! We have beginner classes available to new members and dogs, and offer progressively harder levels as you develop your skills.

Trialling
Obedience trials bring together all the training practiced in obedience classes. In the trial ring, dogs and handlers are instructed to complete a variety of obedience manoeuvres at a high level with specific requirements on reinforcements, positions, and duration. Importantly, no words can be said other than the cue word when trialling.
There are different sections involved in a trial:
- Heelwork, where a judge will verbally instruct the handler to turn left, right, about-face, halt, stand, and down their dog.
- Recall, where the dog is left in a stay off leash and recalled from a certain distance.
- Stand for Exam, where the dog is to remain stationary standing while the judge approaches and touches down the dog’s back
- Stays, where dogs are left in a sit and a down for an extended period of time.
